Tsherin Sherpa

About the Exhibition

Tsherin Sherpa: Line/ages is more than an exhibition; it is a conversation across time. This curated selection from the last decade invites viewers into the artist’s ongoing exploration of how rituals persist, how identities transform, and what is carried forward as people and cultures move through the world.

Sherpa’s visual language presents a studied paradox. He employs skills honed over generations in painting, weaving, and metalwork to build a bridge to the present. In his practice, traditional craftsmanship does not merely preserve the past; it questions and redefines the contemporary, connecting viewers through a living and evolving heritage.

This presentation offers a unique opportunity to engage with a cohesive body of work by an artist who has captivated a global audience. The exhibition brings his significant investigations to Mumbai, where they resonate with the distinct cultural currents of South Asia.

About the Artist

Born in Kathmandu in 1968, Tsherin Sherpa now lives and works between Nepal and California. His artistic foundation was laid by studying traditional Tibetan thangka painting under his father, Master Urgen Dorje.

Sherpa’s practice navigates a unique space, juxtaposing classical Tibetan Buddhist and tantric motifs with mass culture imagery and contemporary composition. His work investigates pressing questions of contemporary religious identity, diasporic experiences, and the survival of traditional artisanal knowledge in a modern world.

His works are held in the permanent collections of major institutions globally, including the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Rubin Museum of Art (New York), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco.
