Shifting Ground

Tom Vattakuzhy

The ground beneath us is never as certain as it seems. It shifts not only in the world around us, but in the ways we experience time, memory, relationships and our place within the world. In Tom Vattakuzhy’s paintings, this instability manifests itself in the most ordinary spaces of life: a family gathered in a room, a child reaching towards something beyond its grasp, two men—one standing, one seated—with a distant mountain beyond them, a woman standing at the threshold of her home. Nothing appears to have entirely broken, yet nothing seems entirely capable of holding.

What does it mean to live in a world whose promises can no longer be trusted? In Vattakuzhy’s paintings, the question is rarely asked directly. It appears instead in the quiet of a room, in the distance between two figures, in a child’s upward-reaching hand, or in the small, uncertain light that survives against the dark. His interiors and landscapes are inhabited by people who continue to live, care, wait and look outward, even as the structures of belief and protection around them begin to falter.

Across these works, Vattakuzhy brings polarities into proximity: young and old, light and dark, sky and water, movement and stillness, intimacy and distance, tenderness and violence. These oppositions are not presented as problems to be resolved. They coexist, often within the same image, allowing one condition to illuminate or unsettle the other. The personal becomes inseparable from the historical; the intimate from the political. What takes place beyond the home is already present within it.
